Whether you call it puppy chow or muddy buddies, this easy dessert recipe is downright delicious! These Nutella Muddy Buddies are always a hit at parties.

This year at my annual holiday party, I decided to put a spin on my popular puppy chow recipe. I wanted it to be festive so I added red food coloring.

But not just any red food coloring. For this recipe to work you need red powdered food coloring. You can easily buy it on Amazon using the link above or pick it up at a baking supply store.

This Red Velvet Puppy Chow was a huge hit at my holiday party! The recipe is just as easy to make as traditional puppy chow. Simply toss the powdered food coloring with the powdered sugar and you’ll get this delicious and festive beautifully sweet snack!

How do you make red velvet puppy chow?

Melt semi sweet chocolate chips, peanut butter and butter together in a large bowl in the microwave. Pour this mixture over 9 cups of rice chex cereal, then toss it with powdered sugar & red powdered food coloring.

How many cups of cereal are in a box of Rice Chex?

A 12 oz box of Rice Chex cereal contains approximately 11 cups of cereal. After making this recipe, you’ll have about 2 cups of cereal left. Snack on it or add it to your next batch of muddy buddies!

How many cups in 12 oz chocolate chips?

A standard 12 oz bag of chocolate chips will yield 1 ½ cups of chocolate chips. This recipe calls for 1 cup of chocolate chips, leaving you with a ½ cup to spare. Add them to your next batch of Nutella Chocolate Chip Cookies or S’Mores Cinnamon Rolls!

Red Velvet Puppy Chow

Red Velvet Puppy Chow is a fun and simple dessert recipe, great for parties and perfect for holidays like Valentine's Day or Christmas!

Ingredients

  • 1 cup chocolate chips
  • ½ cup peanut butter
  • ¼ cup butter
  • 1 tsp vanilla extract
  • 9 cups rice chex cereal
  • 1 ½ cups powdered sugar
  • 2 tbsp red powdered food coloring

Instructions

  • Add the chocolate chips, peanut butter and butter to a medium mixing bowl. Place in the microwave for 1 minute.
  • Remove from the microwave, stir, then microwave for an additional 30 seconds.
  • Remove from the microwave and stir in the vanilla extract.
  • Add the rice chex cereal to a large bowl and pour the chocolate mixture on top. Toss to coat.
  • Add the powdered sugar and red powdered food coloring to the bowl and toss together until the rice chex cereal is fully covered.
