These melt-in-your-mouth brownies are perfect served with a scoop of vanilla ice cream or a large glass of milk! They’re great for parties, holidays or Mondays. Because we could all use a little extra chocolate on a Monday! Am I right?!
The combination of peanut butter and chocolate should go down in history as one of the best of all time! As a kid, the only candy I would eat were Reese’s Cups or Reese’s Pieces!
That’s right, I’ve been a chocolate and peanut butter fan since the ripe age of 3 years old! And I’ve brought my lifelong love of this sweet combo to the blog. Over the years, I’ve shared recipes for Peanut Butter Filled Chocolate Cupcakes and Peanut Butter Chocolate Chip Bars.
But today, I’m introducing the holy grail of chocolate and peanut butter. Double chocolate brownies filled with peanut butter chips! The brownies are moist and fudgy with an extra chocolatey layer on top. The peanut butter chips add a burst of peanut butter goodness right in the middle of the best brownies ever!
I love sharing these as a dinner party dessert or around the holidays. Because let’s be honest, if I didn’t serve them to friends, I’d eat the whole pan myself! Out of all the brownie recipes I’ve made over the years, these really are the perfect brownies!
How to make Double Chocolate Brownies
- Prep
- Preheat the oven to 325°F.
- Coat a 9″ x 13″ baking dish with cooking spray.
- Make the batter.
- In a large bowl, cream butter and sugar together using an electric hand mixer or stand mixer.
- Add eggs, one at a time and mix after each addition.
- Mix vanilla extract into the batter.
- In a small mixing bowl, combine flour, cocoa powder, salt and baking powder.
- Add the dry ingredients to the wet ingredients.
- Use the mixer to combine well.
- Add peanut butter chips and use a spatula to stir them into the batter.
- Bake the brownies.
- Spread the brownie batter into the prepared pan.
- Place in the preheated oven to bake for 45 minutes.
- Quick Tip! You can use a toothpick inserted in the middle of the brownie to check for doneness. Because these are fudgy brownies, the toothpick won’t come out completely clean like it would with a cake-like brownie. A few crumbs on the toothpick is just fine and means it’s done!
- Prepare the chocolate frosting.
- While the brownies are baking, melt chocolate chips in a small saucepan over low-medium heat.
- Quick tip! I used semi-sweet chocolate chips, but milk chocolate or dark chocolate chips will also work just fine.
- As the chocolate starts to melt, add butter and milk.
- Whisk continuously until the chocolate is melted.
- Add powdered sugar and continue whisking so that the chocolate does not burn or stick to the bottom of the pan.
- Once the chocolate is melted and all of the ingredients are combined well, remove the frosting from the heat.
- Set aside until the brownies come out of the oven.
- While the brownies are baking, melt chocolate chips in a small saucepan over low-medium heat.
- Finish the brownies.
- Once the brownies come out of the oven, allow them to cool for 15 minutes.
- Spread the chocolate frosting on top of the brownies.
- Allow to cool for at least 30 minutes before slicing.
How long should brownies sit?
Brownies should sit at room temperature to cool for at least 30 minutes. I recommend closer to 2 hours if you want perfectly clean edges.
If you just want to get in there and dig in to the warm, fudgy goodness sooner than later, do it! You might just get a few more crumbs that someone will have to snack on later. A tough job, but someone’s gotta do it!
Can you over mix brownie batter?
Yes! Do not over mix your brownie batter. Over-mixing the batter can cause your brownies to become tough. All the mixing you need is just enough to combine all of the ingredients!
The difference between Cakey Brownies and Fudgy Brownies
Fudgy brownies are made with more chocolate and butter and less flour. Cakey brownies are made with more flour.

Is it okay to refrigerate brownie batter?
Yes, you can definitely make the brownie batter ahead of time, cover it and place it in the refrigerator for up to 48 hours. When ready to bake the brownies, pour the batter into a greased pan and bake as directed in the recipe.
Can brownies sit out overnight?
Yes! Store baked brownies in an airtight container at room temperature. They will last 3-4 days. I do not recommend storing them in the refrigerator as that will dry them out.
For extra gooey goodness, I recommend microwaving leftover brownies for 20 seconds before eating them. Top the warm brownie with a scoop of vanilla ice cream for a seriously sweet treat. Or even better, top it with peanut butter ice cream for even more peanut butter goodness!

Double Chocolate Brownies with Peanut Butter Chips
Ingredients
- 1 cup butter, softened
- 2 cups sugar
- 1 tsp vanilla extract
- 3 eggs
- 1 cup flour
- ¾ cup cocoa powder
- ½ tsp salt
- ½ tsp baking powder
- 10 oz peanut butter chips
- 1 cup chocolate chips
- 3 tbsp butter
- ¼ cup milk
- 2 cups powdered sugar
Instructions
- Preheat the oven to 325°F and coat a 9" x 13" baking dish with cooking spray.
- Cream the butter and sugar in a large mixing bowl with an electric hand mixer or stand mixer.
- Add the eggs one at a time and combine after each addition.
- Add the vanilla extract and combine.
- In a small mixing bowl, combine the flour, cocoa, salt and baking soda.
- Add to the butter sugar mixture and combine.
- Stir the peanut butter chips into the batter with a spatula.
- Spread the brownie batter into the baking dish and place in the oven for 45 minutes.
- To prepare the brownie frosting while the brownies are baking, add the chocolate chips to a small saucepan on the stove over low-medium heat.
- As the chocolate starts to melt, add the butter and stir to combine.
- Add the milk, continue to whisk consistently until smooth and creamy.
- Add the powdered sugar and whisk to combine.
- Make sure to continue whisking the sauce so that the chocolate does not burn or stick to the bottom of the pan.
- After whisking for 1-2 minutes, the chocolate frosting should be smooth and creamy, at that time remove it from the heat and let stand until the brownies come out of the oven.
- Let the brownies cool for 15 minutes before topping with the chocolate frosting.
- Allow the frosting to cool on top of the brownies for at least 30 minutes before slicing.
Notes
- Cooling time: for perfectly clean sliced brownies, allow the brownies to cool for 2 hours before slicing.
- Storing: baked brownies can be stored at room temperature in an airtight container for 3-4 days.
