The Onion Fried Burger is a popular Oklahoma recipe combining half ground beef and half grilled onions for a deliciously flavorful burger recipe!
If you’ve never been to Oklahoma, you probably haven’t had an Onion Fried Burger. This delicious burger came about during the Great Depression when ground beef was expensive and onions were cheap.
A burger joint in El Reno, Oklahoma created this burger, originally called “The Depression Burger”. What was originally created as a means to survive the great depression, turned into one of my favorite burgers of all time!
Up until a few years ago, my uncle Tony owned an Onion Fried Burger restaurant in my hometown of Edmond, Oklahoma. He decided to retire from the restaurant business and move to the cool mountains of Colorado, so I’m here today to continue our families Onion Fried Burger legacy.
When my food blogger friend Kita at GirlCarnivore.com asked me to join her annual “Burger Month”, I couldn’t wait to share this Oklahoma and Bond family favorite!
Burger Month is an annual event in May, celebrating all things burgers! Over 100 fabulous food bloggers from across the country come together to share the most delicious burger recipes ever!
Follow the hashtag #BurgerMonth on social media throughout May to see all of the tasty creations!
Ingredients you’ll need
- Ground beef (85/15)
- Black pepper
- Salt
- Yellow onions – thinly sliced – I use a mandoline to get ultra thin slices!
- Sliced cheddar cheese
- Hamburger buns
Step by step instructions
- Combine the ground beef, salt and pepper. Form into four quarter-pound patties.
- Heat a cast iron skillet or griddle to medium heat.
- Place the burger patties on the grill for 3-4 minutes, smash the burgers down with a spatula and top with a handful of onions.
- Smash the onions into the patties, cook for another 2-3 minutes, flip and cook 4-6 minutes.
- Place a slice of cheese on each burger patty and allow to melt for 1-2 minutes.
- Add the hamburger buns to the griddle and toast lightly.
- Place each onion fried burger on a bun and serve.
I serve these onion fried burger without toppings, as that’s how I grew up eating them. I love the pure taste of caramelized onion goodness cooked into a juicy burger with melty cheese on a toasty bun!
What to serve with them
- Cheesy Grilled Potatoes
- Dad’s Famous BBQ Baked Beans
- Red White and Blue Cheese Potato Salad
- Watermelon Salad
- 10 Minute Broccoli Salad
- Animal Style Fries
